Sometimes I get asked, 'when do you know a project is finished?' It's a good question. I had it in mind yesterday while out shooting my series, This Last of Meeting Places. It was never going to be a long-term project, just something I wanted to do during the winter, and yesterday felt like I was nearing the end.
When working on a project there's usually an energy and excitement that impels you to go out, to look and to respond to what's around you. After a while that energy kind of drains away and the eyes stop seeing anything new. There comes a point where, photographically speaking, you don't have anything left to say. At least that how it works for me.
Once I feel like I've exhausted a project I like to go back at least one more time. I know I'll come home with just a few photographs but there may be an important one amongst them. That's what happened yesterday. I managed to make these five images which I'm pleased with, but by the end of the day I felt like the story had been told.
So is it finished? Well maybe. Almost.
